B & B Thames - Chartre Manor - Our Story

This accommodation in Thames Chartre` Manor B&B was set up by your Welcoming hosts Pauline and Dennis who are kiwis with a passion for their beautiful homeland of New Zealand (Aotearoa, meaning The Long White Cloud). They purchased their outstanding property in 2006 which was previously a family home of seven bedrooms with a one bedroom cottage adjacent to the house.  It had been built in 1983 in Tudor Style architecture set on 2.5 acres of land.

With their blended family of five adults living away from home, what better use than to setup a B & B in Thames and share it with others to allow them to experience the true New Zealand culture.

The house for our Thames B&B was named Chartré after Pauline's family name Chartres, aka Charteris. Her ancestors originated in Chartres, the French city famed for its cathedral. The Charteris family arrived in Lyttelton, New Zealand from Dumfries, Scotland in August 1863 on the Epsom from London.

Pauline

Pauline was born in Rotorua and was raised on a farm in Mamaku. Her mother originated from Te Arawa tribe of indigenious Maori. She is very active within the Thames community. She owned a Beauty Clinic for approximately 17 years. She is a volunteer member of the Thames Land Search and Rescue and Department of Conservation, Thames Heritage Society, Forest & Bird, Thames' Women's Adventure Group, Totally Thames Inc, Coromandel Coastal Walkways, Kauaeranga Tramping Club, Whangamata Tramping Club, Natural Growers Society, Thames B&B Group, and ProjectTongariro..

Pauline is one of two women who circumnavigated the 400km Coromandel Peninsula solely on the coastline from Thames Wharf to Anzac Cove, Waihi Beach. If you want to know anything about the area, you will find Pauline's knowledge very helpful, or, if unable to help, knows someone that can.  When not so busy at ChartrĂ© Manor she has been tempted to accompanying guests on a tramp or kayak. She balances her life with the theatre, music, dancing and dining out.

Dennis is a retired farmer. In recent years he has worked in the community in various capacities. Dennis' family originated from Cornwall, England. He was born in Thames, leaving at the age of fifteen to follow his dream of becoming a farmer. Fulfilling his dream, he has returned to his home town, after being away for forty years.

He is a member of the Thames Golf Club, Whangamata Tramping Club, Natural Growers Society, Thames Heritage Society and Project Tongariro. He is interested in most sport and is currently playing golf and enjoys fishing. A game of golf before breakfast is always tempting.

Pauline and Dennis enjoy working in their SPRAY FREE garden growing produce to share with others. They have travelled extensively, so understand the needs of their guests.  Home baking is always welcoming and healthy free range eggs from their own chooks are a treat.

Coco & Pippa

Pippa was their cat who everyone adored. She acted as the butler welcoming the guests on arrival to the door. Sadly Pippa went to sleep in 2014 at the age of eighteen.
Coco Chanel Chartre` joined the family in July 2016. She is a Papillon/Shitzu X. Coco is currently being trained to welcome our visitors. She is very friendly and learning the guests' area is out of bounds. She has 2.5 acres to occupy herself on so has plenty of places to explore. We hope she brings you pleasure during your stay.
