Hike to the top of The Pinnacles in the Kauaeranga Forest Park just up the road behind Chartré Manor, visit the Waiomu or Square Kauri, or take a trip on New Zealand's only narrow gauge railway at Driving Creek Railway in the town of Coromandel, through regenerating native forest with spectacular views over the Hauraki Gulf. Gold Mine Experience

Chartré Manor B&B is only seven minutes drive from the Gold Mine Tour and Stamper Battery. It allows the visitor to experience the amazing gold rush era. Guided groups go deep underground in the 100 year old Golden Crown Mine. See the stamper battery actually working, check out the photo history room and try your hand at panning for gold. Take some home! Gold fever came to Thames in 1867. The word spread worldwide and the rush was on. Claims covered the hills and Thames became the third largest town in the country. Some relics, mines and buildings from the boom or bust years have been saved and can be viewed today.

TreasuryThe Treasury

Chartré Manor B&B is only five minutes drive from The Treasury which was formed in 2003 as a purpose built archive and family history centre in the Carnegie Library. It preserves and promotes the history and stories of the people in this region - a region which played such a big part in the early development of New Zealand. If your family has history in the region, why not become a member and keep abreast of all the new developments and the many ways in which you could help preserve our heritage.

Miranda_birds_Keith_WoodleyThames Bird Hide

Chartré Manor B&B is five minutes drive from the Thames Bird Hide and twenty minutes drive from the Miranda Bird Sanctuary on the Firth of Thames, with its 8500 hectares of wide inter-tidal flats, attracts thousands of migratory wading birds.

Some make the arduous 10,000 kilometre journey south from the Artic circle to arrive in the spring and fly north again in the autumn. Others fly 1,000 km north from the braided river systems of the South Island in the autumn and return in the spring. In October its a changing of the guard as the arctic migrants like the eastern bar-tailed godwit, the turnstone and the red necked stint arrive and the birds from the South Island like the wrybill, South Island pied oystercatcher and the kotuku which have over wintered in the Firth, fly back to their southern breeding grounds. After birdwatching why not enjoy a relaxing, soothing dip in the Miranda Mineral Hot Pools.

Hot Water Beach

The Coromandel's dramatic and unspoiled coast, with native pohutukawa (NZ's Christmas) trees along the western coastline is rated the third most scenic drive in New Zealand. Beautiful long, sparsely populated white sandy beaches on the east, offers endless opportunities for fishing, diving, boating, surfing and swimming. Enjoy the unique experience of Hot Water Beach where at low tide you can dig in the sand, allowing the sulphur heated water to rise to the top to create your very own natural thermal spa. Swim with dolphins, hire a kayak and explore the many offshore islands or simply let the azure water lap at your feet and marvel at the beauty of the Pacific Ocean.
